Spotlight coming to the iPhone

iPhone 3.0 Software

The iPhone 3.0 software update, set for a summer release brings with it, a ton of updates and improvements. The long anticipated cut, copy, and paste, MMS, and stereo Bluetooth highlight this release. For me, the top news is Spotlight and how it’s going to bring some much needed functionality to this device.

As the number of apps continue to multiply on my iPhone, a way of easily managing not only my apps, but also my contacts, and other related data is needed. Background running third-party apps are still a no go with 3.0 so while I wish I could get LaunchBar on the iPhone, I’ll gladly take Spotlight.

The current method of dragging around application icons within the home screen without some assistance from the OS needs to be addressed. Spotlight is a move in the right direction and perhaps app management will also improve with 3.0.

Adobe Flash is still missing, but overall, it appears that Apple’s done a solid job of improving the iPhone platform. I’d like to see some more competition from the Android and Pre camps. Anything to keep Apple from getting lazy.
