Software Update Might Brick Your Unlocked iPhone

iPhone

An iPhone software update is coming soon. It will include support for the iTunes Wi-Fi music store. As an added bonus, there’s a good chance that this update could also render your newly unlocked iPhone inoperable.

According to an article in Ars Technica, sources said that Apple didn’t plan to intentionally render the unlocked iPhones useless. My understanding is that the unlocking software functions by altering the code in the iPhone’s modem. I guess the new software update might have some issues with the new modem code.

From a financial perspective, it’s in Apple’s best interest to squash these unlocks since they get a cut of AT&T’s revenue. It’s even more important now with the European launch of the iPhone looming ever closer.

Whatever happens, if you have an unlocked iPhone, don’t run the software update until you’re able to get your phone re-locked.
