Enabling iPhone Emoji Post 2.2.1 Software Update

The 2.2.1 software update made activating emoji (AKA Emoticons) on the iPhone a bit trickier. Fortunately, there’s a 99 cent solution that makes this process painless.
First, you need to purchase the app, Touch Dial Emoji [App Store Link] (currently 99 cents on the iTunes App Store). You then follow these directions:
- Make sure your iPhone’s software is either 2.2 or 2.2.1
- Install Touch Dial Emoji
- Go to Settings -> Touch Dial -> Enable smiley icon to ON
- Launch Touch Dial Emoji
- Go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Japanese -> Enable Emoji.
- Feel free to delete Touch Dial Emoji
I just tested this with an iPhone with software 2.2.1 and I can verify that it does indeed work.
Thanks to Justine Ezarik over at Tasty Blog Snack for sharing this easy to implement method.

So I guess this works between iPhones only, correct? As a SoftBank user, I noticed the emoji keyboard is set to only work with a SoftBank address, and is disabled for other email addresses. Of course, the added benefit for SoftBank users is that these are official SoftBank emoji characters, so they work on any SoftBank phone that receives mail from the iPhone.
Yes, as far as I know, in the US it’s only iPhone to iPhone compatible. Any other handset and chances are good that it’s going to be garbage text.
