Upgrading the Home Network

Time to put some pep back into my network. After several years of mostly reliable service, I’ve thrown out my old Linksys router. An AirPort Extreme Base Station [Amazon Link] has taken its place and for expandability, I’ve attached an HP ProCurve 8-port gigabit switch [Amazon Link].

VisualHub is Back

Due to a decision by the author that will probably remain a mystery, the fantastic video conversion app VisualHub has ceased to exist. He did however, release the source code. After what seemed an eternity, someone has worked with this source code and released a VisualHub equivalent called Video Monkey.

Mac Pick: Pixelmator

Sometimes, Photoshop can be overkill. Thankfully, on the Mac, there’s a good variety of light weight alternatives. Sure, you sacrifice on features, but you also get snappier performance and an easier learning curve.

Mac Pick: ForkLift

At times, it’s nice to have a more feature-rich finder. ForkLift has those extra features and also throws in a robust FTP client.

Mac Pick: Evernote

Evernote is a well designed application for the digital pack rat. It’s able to easily capture, organize, and synchronize bits of information.

Mac Pick: Cocktail

With Cocktail, getting access to some of the more obscure features within OS X is as simple as navigating your standard application menu. There’s also a nice collection of options that allow to users to tweak and maintain their systems.
